Flag Awards

The Flag Committee encourages all chapters to recognize citizens and organizations that fly the U.S. flag regularly and properly by presenting them with a flag certificate.

The Flag Certificate

The Flag Certificate, authorized in 1987, is presented to individuals, companies and government agencies that fly the United States flag for patriotic purposes. It is not to be given to any commercial enterprise that obviously flies it for advertising purposes. It may be presented by an individual or a chapter, based on recommendations of the chapter Flag Chairman.

The certificate has a line in the lower left corner for the name of the appropriate organizations to be engrossed. It also has a line for the appropriate president to sign, and a line for the Flag Chairman to sign.

The State Flag Chairman will have on hand one certificate and presentation folder for each chapter for immediate delivery, for a charge of $5.00 including postage. Other copies may be ordered from the NSSAR Headquarters Supply Department.

The Admiral William R. Furlong Memorial Award

William Rea Furlong graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1905. During World War I he was a gunnery officer serving on battleships in the Western Atlantic and the North Sea. Following that he was Fleet Gunnery Officer Pacific Fleet, served in the Office of Naval Operations, and was Chief of Bureau of Ordinance 1937 to 1941.

During World War II he took part in the engagement against the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, during which his flag-ship was sunk. On December 12, 1941, he was ordered in Command Pearl Harbor to raise the ships that had been sunk and to command the Pearl Navy Yard and Pearl Harbor Navy Base. He did until July 18, 1945, when he reached retirement age. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Gold Star.

Admiral Furlong became a member of the District of Coumbia Chapter in 1949. His patriot ancestor was George Grant, who served as an Ensign in Captain Gavin McCoy's Company, First Regiment, Somerset County NJ Militia. Admiral Furlong died at age 95 in 1976.

The Admiral R. Furlong Memorial Award is presented annually at the SAR Congress to state societies which have fulfilled the qualifications during the previous year. To qualify each state society and one half of its chapters must present, during the previous year, at least one NSSAR Flag Certificate to a person or organization who qualifies.

State Societies are to advise the National Flag Chairman of their qualifications by 15 April each year. Societies which qualify will be selected and their names will be sent to the President General for awarding.
