Judging Details - State

Three judges familiar with American history and English are selected by the ALSSAR Knight Essay Chair.  The judges are not necessarily SAR members.  If SAR members are selected they will be from chapters that did not submit a candidate for the competition. There are no identifying marks, such as name, school, or submitting chapter, on the essays when judging takes place.  Each judge scores the applications independent of the others and the results are tallied and returned to the Chair.

Winner Information

1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd Place winners are selected:  $300 to first place, 2nd place is $200, and 3rd place is $150.  .  The 1^st Place winner and parents (or total of 3) traditionally attend the ALSSAR Convention Banquet (February 25, 2012) where they are the guests of the Alabama Society.  The winner will receive a medallion, certificate, and $200.  “Travel” expenses (consisting of 25 cents/mile, 1 room for 1 night, and non-banquet meals) up to a total of $200, if requested, will also be paid.  Receipts are required.  The 1st place National award is $2,000, 2nd place is $1,000; 3rd place is $500. 

Chapter Information

Notify State Chairman of Chapter Chairman.  Ensure Chapter Chairman is listed on website.  The Home Education Association in each chapter's area should also be invited to participate.

Notify 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd Place winners and respective Chapters in writing.  If central hotel is used for Convention, ensure room reservation is made if parents can not do so in timely fashion.  Obtain Knight Essay medallion (for 1^st Place), and certificates and certificate folder for all Places from SAR Merchandise; engrave winner’s name.  Request reimbursement of expenses, including postage, etc. from ALSSAR Treasurer.  Inform banquet organizers of number and names.
