The Chapter is named in honor of Major General Richard Montgomery, deceased, an Irish-American soldier, who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was the first General Officer killed in the Revolutionary War, while leading the Canadian Expedition as they pushed on to Quebec with barely 800 strong. An assault was made on the 31st of December 1775, and almost at the first discharge of fire, General Montgomery was killed.
To accomplish the objectives of the Sons of the American Revolution, as our Alabama Society President Pickette stated “Éour Society is an organization with patriotic, historical, and educational objectives, including the perpetuation of the memory of the men and women who, by their sacrifices during the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American people. We seek not only to preserve the memory of our forebears, but to instill in all citizens an appreciation of our national heritage and a greater understanding of our national identity.”
